US CONCERT - Lakeland Civic Center, Lakeland FL
Start of another leg of Elton's solo Medusa Tour.
Bill Dean reviewed the show for The Lakeland Ledger, user the headline "Rocket Man Lifts Off In Lakeland", here are some excerpts:
- It was enough to make Tampa and Orlando turn green with envy -- and on St. Patrick's Day no less.
- Elton John's blood may run the Queen's red instead of Irish green, but Friday night's sold-out jam of a concert at The Lakeland Center proved the king of piano soul, ballads -- and yes, barrel top boogie-woogie -- has still got it after all these years.
- He appeared on a super-low -- and super-crowd friendly -- four-foot-high stage that afforded good views even to those in the back. The light rig above him looked like a hot-air balloon complete with basket, which lowered and turned into a grandiose chandelier.
- And John, who turns 53 a week from today, rewarded a packed-to-the-rafters arena of 8,071 with heartfelt songs stretching the breadth of his breathtaking 30-year career.
- ... the two-hour-and-fifty minute show...
- Perhaps not too surprising for a man firmly in middle-age, he left the high parts from Crocodile Rock and others to the audience. At the same time, however, the show had plenty of room for full-bodied vocals -- which he demonstrated all night long.
- Wearing purple glasses and a dark purple outfit...
- He ... ended the show with a special message for the crowd: "I hope this year brings you all the love, happiness and peace it can give you and I want to thank you for all the love and generosity you've sent my way." Truly, who could ask for anything more?

US NEWSPAPER - USA Today
The paper ran an interview with Elton John that can be viewed online. Here are some highlights:
- "They can't seem to pension me off," jokes the ubiquitous pop giant, still standing tall after 35 years of recording. "They can't pension off the Rolling Stones or Pink Floyd or Eric Clapton. I love seeing young people come up, but how dare anyone suggest that the Stones are old and boring or that Joni Mitchell is incapable of writing new songs because she's over 50? That's crap."
- Awards, John says, "are a crap-shoot; I take them with a grain of salt."
- He spent years sculpting music for both projects [The Lion King and Aida] and was particularly daunted by the challenge of recasting the Verdi classic Aida. "I thought we'd get pillaged - how can you emulate something with so much gravitas as a full-blown opera?" says John... "We had to do something totally different."
- John fought for his vision. A month ago, he made headlines after abruptly exiting an Aida performance in protest. "I was p----- off at the way they treated two songs," he says. In December, he'd been assured that techno treatments of Another Pyramid and My Strongest Suit would be cut. They weren't. "So I walked out to make a point. It may not be subtle, but I had to do it. It got fixed. I saw Aida twice last week, and it was as perfect as I thought it could be."
- He pitched a similar battle to rescue Without Question from El Dorado's cutting-room floor. Yanked from an early version, the song was restored at John's insistence. Coincidentally, filmmakers had removed Can You Feel the Love Tonight from The Lion King two weeks before its release. John prevailed in a studio tug-of-war, and the tune scored an Oscar.
- Surprisingly, he relishes teamwork. "My entire career has been a collaboration," John says. "You're not going to see eye-to-eye all the time, but the process is fascinating. Besides, I'm not a very good lyric writer. It's good to know your limitations."
- Singer and ex-addict Bonnie Raitt, John's friend since the early '70s, was witness to his remarkable transformation from indulged rock star to philanthropist and grounded human being. "I salute the changes he's made in his life and the real difference he's made in the AIDS fight," she says. "What I love about him most is he's not stuck up. He's genuinely himself. He has no guile. He's real and vulnerable and sincere and enthusiastic."
- It pains John to see rock's mounting drug casualties. He helped steer Courtney Love out of addiction. He's distressed that newly sober Scott Weiland of Stone Temple Pilots is planning to tour. "That is scary," John says. "I took a year off. I thought the world would stop and nobody would remember me, but I did what I was told because you have to. It's a hard journey. When I read that Scott was going straight from treatment to the road, I thought, 'Oh, my God, I hope he'll be alive. I hope he's all right.' You can't look after everybody. People in this business can be self-destructive. They want attention and validation, so they go onstage and strut their stuff, but they don't know how to behave in public life. That was me. I was fine onstage. It was an escape. But I couldn't deal with life offstage. I couldn't communicate. I'd close the door and send an assistant to deal with everything. Look at Liza Minnelli, another one who lives life on the stage. It's tragic."
- "Gianni [Versace]used to say, 'Elton, there is no time to sit down! You must see this church. You must see this beautiful painting in the museum.' He taught me so much. He said, 'Take it all in. We're not here very long.' I don't hide from life anymore."
US TV - Today Show, NBC network

Their plan goes bad and the rogues end up lost at sea after a number of misfortunes. Oddly enough, they end up on the shores of El Dorado and are worshiped by the natives for their foreign appearance. Summary written by Paolo Costabel.
