US AWARD - National Association of Broadcasters' Education Foundation's Leadership Award

  1. +Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word - Oleta Adams
Elton John accepts an award recognizing his continuing dedication to raising money to fight HIV and AIDS through his Elton John AIDS Foundation. The National Association of Broadcasters' Press Release.

Elton John: "I'm not self-obsessed anymore. I'm obsessed with people having dignity brought back to their lives. I'm obsessed with helping others, whether they have breast cancer, whether they have any form of cancer, whether they have diabetes. If the call is made, I will be there. I've seen enough suffering in this world to last me several lifetimes, and I don't want to die seeing more suffering. I want to be able to take my last breath and say, 'We have made such a difference.'

"We, meaning all of you out there, all of you have the power to communicate with people the messages about AIDS, about anything that needs to be done to prevent this disease from spreading further, to educate. You've already done so much. I'm asking you to do a little bit more. And if you do a little bit more, I'll always be there for you.

"This is an amazing achievement for me. It just spurs me on to do even more."

June 16 2007

RUSSIA CONCERT - Maidan Nezalojnosti (Independence Square), Kiev

Elton John and the Band play a free AIDS awareness concert. The show was broadcast live on the Ukrainian TV channel "New Channel". Elton said, Elton said, "I am delighted to announce that on Saturday 16th June 2007 I will be playing to the citizens of Kiev at a free AIDS awareness concert in one of the city's most beautiful squares. My Foundation has funded twenty-three HIV/AIDS related projects in Ukraine over the last six years totaling over $2.6 million. This concert will enable us to fund future projects for around the same amount. No one envisaged, back in the early '90s, that Eastern Europe would fall prey to such a devastating disease. It is estimated that, by 2014, there will be over one hundred thousand infected children alone, of which forty two thousand will be orphaned; there is so much to be done if we are to control the relentless spread of this terrible disease. Without the close friendship and collaboration of my two very good friends, Elena Franchuk and Victor Pinchuk and their Foundations, this concert, and our future partnership, would not be possible. I would like to dedicate the concert to them and to the many Ukrainians with HIV/AIDS that they have supported."

ENGLAND CONCERT - The Red Piano - O2 Arena, London

The first time Elton John performed his Red Piano show outside of Las Vegas.

Leading up to the show, Elton John said: "I'm really pleased to be coming home with this show. The show is all about love. We have so many things thrown at us in our everyday lives that are so upsetting that no one really ever concentrates on the positive things in life - we only read about the horrible things that go on. But you know, I believe in love". Show designer David LaChapelle said: "The show is a visual extravaganza, a collage of all the outrageous and beautiful images Elton has been responsible for in his career. I just wanted it to sparkle and shine and just be lush. Almost edible, like looking at a candy store. Elton has had a lot of fun. There have been some sad parts in his life, but when he's on that stage I think that he loves it. This was a way of showing that love of performing and pay tribute to it".

UK TV - Elton John: Me, Myself and I (ITV1)

Through special effects technology, Elton John "goes back in time" to visit key moments in his life and career. This 90 minute program was created with exclusive access to Elton and to archival photos and video footage. While promoting the show, Elton commented: "It's kind of touching in a way to look at my life like that, seeing things that I've done and that I've been through and still be able to laugh at it. I've taken work seriously, the artistic side of things, but I've never really taken fame seriously otherwise I wouldn't be able to look back and laugh at some of the hideous things I've done!"

US BOOK - It Ain't Easy: Long John Baldry and the Birth of the British Blues - by Paul Myers

Elton John's official website reports on this new book:

"On Friday, November 9th, at 7:00 pm, writer Paul Myers will host a San Francisco launch of his new book, "It Ain't Easy: Long John Baldry and the Birth of the British Blues". The launch takes place at The Booksmith, 1644 Haight Street, San Francisco, CA, 94117, tel: (415) 863-8688. Myers, who interviewed Elton at length for this book, will be on hand to discuss and sign copies of the book at the San Francisco launch. There will also be a brief screening of an excerpt from a new BBC / Bravo! documentary, Long John Baldry: In The Shadow of the Blues.

"The book is a detailed account of the foundations of British rock, and of the life of Long John Baldry, the musician who inspired a generation of British artists to discover American blues and sell it back to the States. Baldry was a key musical figure in Elton's early career. He provided Reg Dwight with the John part of his new name, and he is also acknowledged as 'sugarbear', the subject of the song Someone Saved My Life Tonight, about a period when Elton was in despair due to problems in his personal life.

"A driving force behind the British blues explosion in the 1960s, Baldry's passion and support for American blues artists such as Muddy Waters, Lead Belly and Howlin' Wolf influenced many British musicians including Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, The Rolling Stones and the Beatles. While Baldry is credited with helping launch the careers of Rod Stewart and Elton, he died in relative obscurity in Vancouver, Canada in July 2005. Myers' biography celebrates the wild life of Long John Baldry and, as a history of blues, gives new insight into a cornerstone of rock-and-roll.

"Paul Myers gained exclusive interviews with Baldry's family members including his 20-year partner Oz and his siblings Margaret and Roger; as well as musicians including Elton, Paul McCartney, Mick Fleetwood and Rod Stewart; and other notable figures such as the Rolling Stones' former manager Andrew Loog Oldham.

"Myers said, 'After a lot of string pulling and journalistic sleuthing, I was thrilled by how many famous and integral names turned out to speak about their old friend John.' "

November to December 2007

The start of Elton John's Asia-Pacific Rocket Man Solo Tour series of solo shows. At the Australian shows, Eran James performed as the opening act. Eran is a Melbourne teen soul singer.

Clive Franks, Elton John's sound engineer, was asked about some of the sonic "tricks" employed during the solo shows, such as how it is that Elton can sound as if he is singing harmonies or playing other instruments during the concert, when he is the only musician onstage.

Clive Franks: "Here's a brief explanation re the couple of technical 'tricks' that we use in the solo show.

"Elton's piano is a standard 9 foot Yamaha Grand that is fitted with an electronic 'MIDI' controller which is positioned on the soundboard under the piano hammers. This generates an electronic signal for each note played, which can then be assigned to literally any pre-recorded 'MIDI' sound that we wish to use. Elton's piano technician Dale Sticha changes these sounds just by pushing a button on a small unit which is in his electronics rack on the side of the stage next to the monitor console. The particular sound which could be strings, brass, electric piano etc is then assigned to my mixing console and I use it in the appropriate places during certain songs, sometimes varying the intensity to add more dynamics.

"The three part vocal harmony that can be heard on the choruses of Ticking is generated from Elton's live vocal which I send into a multi effects unit called an 'Eventide Harmonizer'. I set the notes to a 3rd and a 5th above the root note that Elton is singing, and then fade them in and out at the appropriate times.
"So as you can see there are no other musicians or singers involved. Everything you hear is generated by Elton's live performance...and put together by a couple of clever audio technicians!"

Summer 2007

ENGLAND CONCERTS

Elton John said during his June 21 2006 concert in Birmingham England, that he would only be doing two concerts in England during 2007. Both shows will be at Vicarage Road Watford in the summer of 2007 and will feature "some very special guests".
Subsequent bookings of shows in Sheffield on May 24 and London on July 1 obviously resulted in changes to this plan.
