An early photo of the Glass Orchestra being filmed in a Berlin TV studio. (circa 1979-80?) The bulk of the instruments consisted of "found" instruments like the bubble bowls and oversized brandy snifters sitting beside the players on the floormats. Smaller wine glasses and bowls were mounted on clear plexiglass resonator boxes. Hanging from the microphone stand in the background is an early model of the Glass Icicles or windchimes.
Recording the glass instruments has always proved to be a challenge. Instruments that were "finger-bowed" at one moment could be struck with hard mallets the next moment. This meant that an instrument would go from being quiet and difficult to hear to being very loud when struck. This is one of the few photographs of the ensemble as a quintet.
