The Crystal Gong has the purest and longest lasting sustain of any Glass Orchestra instrument. This pure quartz Crystal Gong is just one of a collection that the Glass Orchestra uses. Gerhard Finkenbeiner has made all of the quartz crystal instruments that the ensemble uses. He has told us that quartz is the purest form of glass that exists, being almost 100% pure. He is also of the opinion that quartz crystal is very much alive because when he heats it up to a certain temperature it tries to turn itself back into its original crystal shape. This is the same form of quartz that is at the heart of our computers.
On the rare occasion when one of the group members breaks a Crystal Gong, the pieces sound just as good (although different) as the original Gong. Another interesting thing about quartz made instruments is that if it breaks and the pieces are not too small you can fuse the instrument back together, an impossibility with regular glass compounds. The quartz instruments are the basis for the groups composition "The Bells of Siliconesia".
