A captured moo session

This capture can orient you to the text based world of the MOO. I have left in the commands that were used as well as their results so you will see:

say Hi
RickS says, "Hi"

Once you use a telnet program moo.hawaii.edu 9999 or a java enabled browser http://moo.hawaii.edu:7000/

you will see....

Welcome to ATHEMOO!

Please note: ATHEMOO is a professional community where people
interested in theatre come to exchange information, have meetings
and learn about MOO technology and its uses for classroom and
other projects.

ATHEMOO was developed under the auspices of the Association for
Theatre in Higher Education (ATHE) and with the generous support
of the University of Hawaii at Manoa. The statements and
viewpoints expressed here are not necessarily those of the ATHE,
the janitors, Juli Burk, or the University of Hawaii and those
parties disclaim any responsibility for them.

Type:
`connect Guest' to connect to a Guest character
'connect playername password' to connect as your character
`@who' just to see who's logged in right now
`@quit' to disconnect either now or later

(then you type and you may need to do this more than once)

Lobby

Welcome to the ATHEMOO lobby! The lobby is brightly lit and looks
like a fun, comfortable place to be. From here you can
see that in the Bar there is a festively decorated cart with champagne
to celebrate ATHEMOO's Grand Opening, why not go in and try some!

Beginners, to speak to others, type say and hit enter. The computer
will prompt you for your message after which you hit enter again.

Why not try ATHEMOO's new tutorial? Type @tutorial and hit enter.

You see Lobby Clock, Credits, ATHEMOO News, ATHEDog, and Sign to Kafka Project
here.
Obvious exits: east to Stairwell, north to Courtyard, bar to Dancer's Barre
and Grill, desk to Registration Desk, ZeNews to Newsstand, and up to Whine
and Cheese Balcony

Then the guest, knowing how to 'look' typed:

look Sign

The sign reads:
Type @go Samsa

so the guest types:

@go Samsa

The Samsa front yard
You stand outside the home of Gregor Samsa. He woke up a few mornings ago to
find that he had been transformed, during the night into a giant insect.
There is a hospital behind the house and it looks like rain. Type enter or
'in' to visit the house. Perhaps you can find a script and costume that will
transform you as well. There is a closet in the foyer that may contain these
items.

If you're new to mooing and want some help type @tutorial and hit enter.
This will work anyplace in the moo, as well as simply typing 'help say'
or'help go' or 'help look' or just 'help'.
Sometimes the connection is severed. Don't get frustrated, just hop right
back. (moo.hawaii.edu 9999).

And don't forget, just typing 'l' or 'look' will always tell you where you
are. (try 'look plaque')

NOTICE:: Upon entering the house you won't be able to say or emote unless you
get a costume from the closet.
(You can use page instead of say commands Syntax: page <player><text> )

You see Bronze Plaque and The Samsa House here.
Obvious exits: [Front_Door] to The Foyer
You teleport into The Samsa front yard...

The guest types:

look house

A middle class dwelling on an old, sparcely populated street. There is a
hospital behind the house merging an industrial backdrop with an often grey
sky.

and then:

look plaque

The plaque is mounted on a metal pole stuck in the overgrown front lawn ofthe
Samsa home. (type 'read plaque')

Then:
read plaque

On the plaque, in embossed lettering:
This plaque has been mounted to recognize the intense richness of the
experience of Franz Kafka's writings. If you have never read The
Metamorphosis (or any of Kafkas work) please go and do so now. The
experience of The Samsa Home beyond this front yard, although informative
and entertaining, will be greatly served by the experience of the original
work(s). There, one can get a sense of the psychology of Kafkas characters;
The Father, a Freudian Terror, the ineffectual, doting mother figure, the
sister a vast potential for power and accomplishment, and of course the
Insect, Gregor, who is Kafka himself. Most of the young men who are the main
characters of Kafkas novels are reflections of himself. Low self-esteem,
deep feelings of guilt and a sense of despair.

It is the merging of the implausible with the mundane which, years after his
death, brought Franz Kafka great fame and a place among literary giants such
as Rilke, Proust and Joyce. Today the term Magic Realism (applied to writers
like Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Jose Donoso) would be a valid point of entry
into the study of Kafka.

(You finish reading.)

It's a good idea, to re-orient yourself, to frequently type:

look

You see Bronze Plaque and The Samsa House here.
Obvious exits: [Front_Door] to The Foyer

AH ha, The guest notices, in the text above, that typing 'in' or 'enter' will lead into the house so:

in

The Foyer
The entrance to the home has a closet for coats and costumes (type 'look
closet' to see if any costumes are available). A corridor extends (n) to the
kitchen and a livingroom (e) opens up on the east side of the house where
Grete entertains the boarders on her violin. A set of stairs goes 'up' to the
second floor.

----NOTICE:
Only those wearing costumes will be able to speak and emote here.
All others must use the page command to communicate.
ie. 'RickS Hello or page RickS Hello instead of say.

You see the costume closet here.
Obvious exits: up to The Hallway, Front_Door to The Samsa front yard, north to
Kitchen, and east to the Sitting Room
RickS has connected.

Grete says, "hello, I'm RickS playing Grete"

The guest uses the short cut for 'say' which is a quote mark and types:

"hello

Nothing happens so the guest does a look:

look

RickS is here

Ah ha, You notice that you can't speak here unless you have a costume. So:

look closet

This is the costume closet. The Costumes have built-in scripts which can be
used to generate a moo theatre Metamorphosis.
Type 'take (costume name) from closet'.
NOTE: There is no space between Mr. and Samsa or Mrs. and Samsa.
The observer and the Doctor don't have scripts.

Type '@gender M' (or F or it, whatever applies to your character). Don't
forget to change back after the show!

If you leave the house the costumes don't work.

After you take a costume, type 'look (costume name)' to see what you can do.

On leaving, it would be a kindly gesture, as in all theatres, to return to the
Foyer and type 'put (costume name) in closet'.
Contents:
Herr Doctor (Costume)
observer (Costume)
Mr.Samsa (Costume)
Gregor (Costume)
Mrs.Samsa (Costume)

So the guest types:
take Mrs.Samsa from closet

You remove Mrs.Samsa (Costume) from the costume closet.
and then the guest types:
look Mrs.Samsa

Mrs.Samsa tries, often without success, to bolster her family. Her asthma often
gives the family cause to wish she would do less.

Type 'wear Mother' or 'wear M' to put on the costume.
This costume comes with a built-in script and will generate text for
improvisation when you type 'read Mother' or 'read M' or 'read Mrs.Samsa'.

wear M

You put Mrs.Samsa (Costume) on.

"hello
You say, "hello "
Others see Mrs.Samsa says, Hello"
Grete asks, "Can I get you something?"

Now, when the guest uses the " (or say) command it is spoken by Mrs. Samsa BUT the guest can also use the built-in script to the character and types:

read M (for Mother)
Mrs.Samsa asks, "Grete, Grete did you clean his room?"

Grete says, "yes Mother"
Grete rolls her eyes

--------Grete rolls her eyes is accomplished with the 'emote' command, a colon with no space following it and then text. So,
:rolls her eyes
reads as Grete rolls here eyes---------

"Just asking dear..
You say, "Just asking dear.."
Grete says, "It's ok Mother. I'm going up to check on Gregor."
"all right. I'll go make dinner
You say, "alright. I'll go make dinner"

RickS goes upstairs.

(Here is something I still need to work out. I haven't replaced the exit and enter names with characters yet. So RickS leaves instead of Grete)

Then our guest (Now Mrs.Samsa) goes north by typing a 'n'

n

Kitchen
Rich smells pervade the room. There is a large table with six seats around it.
A pipe and tobacco sometimes lay on the table near an ashtray with apple
seeds in it.

You see table, six chairs, and applecore here.
Obvious exits: Foyer to The Foyer and southeast to the Sitting Room

sit

You sit down at the head of the table.
read M

Now our guest tries an improv between the randomly generated texts from the script (read M) and use of the 'say' command.
Mrs.Samsa shouts, "Leave my son alone, please."

read M
Mrs.Samsa asks, "Grete, Grete did you clean his room?"

"oh what's the use...
distant gurgles (this is a sound generated somewhere in the house!)

You say, "oh what's the use..."

"oh dear

You say, "oh dear"

look

Shakespeare's_Guest is sitting at the head of the table.

(again upon 'look' one sees the guest not the character. I'm still working on this)
You see table, six chairs, and applecore here.

Obvious exits: Foyer to The Foyer and southeast to the Sitting Room

Stand

You stand up.

Mrs.Samsa types 'se' because southeast will take her to the sitting room

se

the Sitting Room
The livingroom is large and open. Heavy curtains are drawn across the windows.

You see 10 seats, The three lodgers, and curtains here.
Obvious exits: west to The Foyer and north to Kitchen

:just tidies about
Mrs.Samsa just tidies about
an important command to leave
@quit
*** Disconnected ***
but Mrs.Samsa you didn't go back to the foyer and 'put Mrs.Samsa back in closet'
And Grete is still wandering around the upstairs looking for her brother the giant insect.

SEE YOU THERE!!!
