A PALÆOZOIC GEOLOGY OF LONDON, ONTARIO

4,569 words, June 1974

AUTHOR'S PREFACE

The Palæozoic era is the first of three major eras that divide the history of life on earth. The era previous to the Palæozoic, the Proterozoic, contains evidence of multi-cellular life-forms, but the Palæozoic era had the first prolific, fossil record. Its onset was approximately 550 million years ago and it lasted some 360 million years. It was in this period that aquatic creatures resembling worms evolved into vertebrate, air-breathing reptiles. It was also during this period that land plants arose and the first forests appeared.
The Palæozoic era is itself broken down into six smaller units called systems. In chronological order these are the Cambrian, Ordovician, Silurian, Devonian, Carboniferous, and Permian systems. In Southwestern Ontario these systems are represented up to the Devonian but terminate just inside of the Carboniferous. The upper layers have been removed by erosional factors chiefly glacial. The Niagara Escarpment is almost a complete section of the Silurian system. The Palæozoic rocks in Southwestern Ontario are composed of non-clastic, ocean floor depositions. (Thus the limestone is entirely composed of the organic shells and skeletons of marine creatures.) The ocean at the time of deposition was tropical, warm and shallow. The systems themselves breakdown into still further, lithological divisions, but these are regional and extend into the titles of some of the Poems.
The section entitled Lithology Of The Memory Table is composed of corresponding "explanations" of poems in the Memory Table . This correspondence also occurs vertically within the Log Entries .
A man's entire experiential memory exists only unto himself, is fractionally communicable and chronologically ephemeral. (The mnemonic palæontology is not consumed. Consummation is the negation of induction by proximity.) There do exist, however, certain three-dimensional, universally perceptible memories posited from the workings of the evolutionary mind of form. THE FOSSIL IS PURE MEMORY.

Transubstantiation

Devoid of perception the
blind form of the fossil
exists post-factum.
Its movement planetary, tectonic.
The flesh of these words
(as the words must be placed together
in light of theiyr skeletons)
Or rather the motion ascribed to
becomes a vehicle (for Paraclete).

What rises.
From the visible altar
to the altar sublime. Is
Is what we wish to inhabit
just the bread, just the wine.

Erosion unites with process to reveal
form.
Complies with laws
independent of vision.
In formation.
Mirrors.
(a photograph of the author photographing themselves)
At any given moment
moment is solid.

"Generation" of the Son.
"Procession" of the Holy Spirit.
A unicorn
white from existence in the underworld.
Gold is sprinkled on a fossil or
administered intravenously.
(in the late 4th century
the Arians released the unicorn in a cavern
to the thin leathern applause of bats)

"Generation" of Logos.
"Procession" of the Holy Spirit.
