In addition to the "episode," the first DVD will include a number of behind-the-scenes featurettes that were shot for inclusion on the DVD, plus a number of original short pieces that will be filmed in February (2006) featuring glimpses into the future of Babylon 5.

The "episode" will have nearly two hundred EFX shots, including all parts Alliance space, and Babylon 5, which is being redesigned using the latest CGI technology. The same CGI are being used to create virtual sets "a la Sin City," (says JMS) and they will be integrated with actual sets which have been recreated based on the original blueprint designs for Babylon 5.

From: Babylon5Scripts.com, (L to R) Bruce Boxleithner (Sheridan), Peter Woodward (Galen), Tracy Scoggins (Lockley), JMS (the B5: The Lost Tales (2006, Dec 02)
(* Spoiler Warning *) "Voices in the Dark," covers the 72 hour period of time as Sheridan travels on board a Presidential Cruiser en route to Babylon 5 from Minbar for a celebration marking the tenth anniversary of the founding of the Interstellar Alliance. Part of the story follows Sheridan as he picks up an unexpected visitor on the edge of Centauri space, Prince Regent Dius Vintari, and a warning about what will come afterward delivered by the techno-mage, Galen. The other part of the story is set aboard Babylon 5, as Colonel Lochley summons a priest from Earth space to deal with a problem that may have dark supernatural overtones.

With advances in technolofy since filming of the original series, some concepts which were not incorporated in the original sets have been added. Plus there have been some in the look of B5, including halls, the staton, starfuries and various alien ships.

Other changes include new characters:

  • Prince Regent Vintari, Centauri, third from the throne;
  • a new ISN reporter played by Teryl Rothery;
  • a priest played by Alan Scarfe;
  • and a character who may have come too close to certain dark forces played by Bruce Ramsey.

B5: The Lost Tales (2006, Jul 25)
Amongst other things at San Diego Comic Convention, see below, JMS announced Babylon 5: The Lost Tales a series of short anthology films ("mini-movies") set in the Babylon 5 Universe. JMS has asked for no interference, support in writing and to be able to directed them, so far Warner Bothers (WB) have said, "Okay." There is a network interested and there are also plans for direct to DVD sales. At this time the first will be three individual stories about three of the main characters (to be determined), start shooting in September, post-production October-December and released in the second quarter of 2007. All of this came about because WB has asked if JMS would like to do a Babylon 5 feature film, but Joe can't imagine a movie with the loss of Andreas and Rick, but maybe he will feel differently in a year or two. (Source: Jan Schroeder) (more at AiCN)

Star Trek (2005, Feb 16)
Update: Just 24 hours after posting his remakers to return Star Trek to it's roots J. Michael Straczynski (JMS) asked fans to "belays" their efforts for two reasons:
  • He has been offered a new TV series for the 2006 fall season so he wouldn't be able to commit to it at this time and
  • he has heard through sources that Paramount plans to give Star Trek a rest for at least two years no matter who offers therefore he doesn't want to see fans waste their and effort on a campaign at this time.

Star Trek (2005, Feb 15)
JMS and Bryce Zabel have announced they are up for the challenge of taking on a new Star Trek series. This information came in a recent posting (by JMS) on the Star Trek and Babylon 5 Usenet Groups regarding he cancellation of Star Trek: Enterprise.

Mr. Zabel and JMS have already present to Paramount, a bible/treatment they developed on their own time for a new 5 year arc that would return to the roots of Trek and Gene Roddenbury's visio. The goal is to return to challenging stories, contemporary themes, solid extrapolation, and the infusion of some of our best and brightest SF prose writers. Unfortunately, at the time, Paramount did not take them up on their offer.

If you would like to see JMS and Mr. Zabel spearhead a new Trek series, then they encourages you to let Paramount know. A recent Web based SciFi Wire Poll of 18,000 fans found 48% voted for JMS to take on a new Star Trek series.

TMOS (2005, Jan 31)
JMS continues to hint that there are some possible issues with The Memory of Shadows feature film:
"I'd say that the next two weeks are going to be critical for the future of TMoS. There have been a variety of conversations about a variety of things and people, and some offers are starting to go out to various individuals...so we shall see what we shall see."

I do think him choosing to say "and people" is a big hint that there has been a lot of discussion in that area.

    B5: TMOS (2004, Apr 30)
JMS has dropped a few more hints on activities, my impression, based upon one of his last comments, is it's a motion picture deal. However, there maybe more on the go that just B5: TMOS.

"I know I've been absent for a while now, but there are reasons, especially in regards to B5:TMoS. In a project of this nature, and this size, there's stage one (let's do this) stage two (let's make everybody's deal) and stage three (making it). We're hip-deep in stage two just now, and it's taking a freaking long amount of time to get through it all. Stage two is also the most unnerving and nerve-wracking stage when there's a lot of money involved, as there is in this situation."

"Thing of it is...there's a LOT happening right now in the B5 universe, on a multitude of fronts, some of it in response to TMoS, some of it coming up completely on its own. All I can say at this moment is that if you've been waiting for new stuff in the B5 universe, you may be getting your wish in spades very soon."

"Soon, I promise, all will be made clear. I don't like being Mr. Mysterioso on this, but if I say too much, the-powers-that-be will use my head to make a 2.35:1 sized hole in the wall."

    DVD (2004, Apr 28)
I've updated the DVD information page to include the Easter Egg information for each.

    Babylon 5 (2004, Mar 01)
JMS (RE: B5: TMOS) "The only things I can say right now about B5:TMoS is that now that all the correct agreements have been signed, sealed and delivered, the draft has gone in, met with great enthusiasm all around, notes have been received, and the next draft is in process and has to be delievered within two weeks so that certain other steps can be set into motion."

    Babylon 5 (2004, Feb 01)
JMS has announced that new Babylon 5 project in the works that he had hoped to have an announcement at the end of January, is taking a little longer to get finalized than he had originally hoped. The only hint we've had to date is the initials of the title: B5: TMoS. He did say one person has guessed the title on the Babylon 5, moderated USENET group.

    Rangers (2002, Apr 05)

    Rangers & Jeremiah (2002, Feb 20)
JMS in a Feb 19 posting indicated he still has not heard any word on B5:LoTR being sold to foreign markets. However, he did say that internation sales meeting (NATPE) there was a large interest around Jeremiah.

Jeremiah, JMS' new show on Showtime has a premiere date March 3 at 8pm ET on Showtime. It will become part of Showtime's Sci-Fi Friday schedule.

    Rangers (2002, Jan 28)
Legend of the Ranger's flops on the East Coast. According to a posting by JMS the average ratings for the telefilm were 1.7 well below the 2.6 SciFi was expecting. However, when the numbers are looked at in more detail it appears the NFL playoff game is to blame. The west cost number show the LotR pulled in a 3.2 to 3.6 in many markets where it airing after the playoff game. This doesn't boad well for a possible spin off series.

    Gathering (2002, Jan 14)
There will be a group of us gathering Saturday, Jan 19 around 8:30 pm at Joe Mercury's in Toronto to watch Legend of the Rangers. However, the room we plan to watch in only holds 15 people and we already have that many. BUT, the management said they would be willing to let people watch on other TVs with the Closed Captioning on as the bar can be loud and you may have trouble hearing it. If you are interested in coming send me an e-mail at schrist@vex.net and I can add you to the overflow list and have an idea of the numbers.

    Rangers (2002, Jan 07)
Sadly, the Jan 05 reports of the CHUM Group having purchased the rights to Babylon 5: Legend of the Rangers was false. While talks ARE going on, no final deal has been reached. Plans are now underway to have a Gathering in Toronto to watch it on SciFi if you are interested in attend e-mail me at schrist@vex.net. Details to come... we just need to get a rough idea of numbers.

    Amazing Stories (2000, Jan 15)
Here is what JMS has to say on the third B5 story to appear in Amazing Stories
The third, which I just finished and turned in to Amazing Stories, and which will appear I think around May, was written with one express purpose: to set the proverbial cat amongst the proverbial pigeons with something that's going to send a ripple all through B5 fandom, it's a story I don't think anyone ever expected to see.
Just the first line alone should stun a number of B5 folks
And that's all I'm going to say about it. But just know...there's a real toad-strangler coming up in May.

The JMS segment on the future will two more times on CBS. In a e-mail JMS stated, "I was even more incorrect than I thought - apparently (given a phone call today from CBS), they thought the piece was important enough to justify pulling it out and making it a stand-alone piece on its own. It's going to air twice, once Sunday morning, once I think Monday (I'll have to check the message later) the longer version of the two runs about 8 minutes. More info later"

    Space (1999, Dec 29)

    [Updated]
Space's schedule does not include the episode Babylon Squared later this month. This seems to be a result of the episode being played as one of the most popular episodes during the 1999 New Year's B5 Marathon. Here is an e-mail I got on the subject.
I have updated the [Space Schedule]

JMS and CC (1999, Dec 04)
Well the rumours about about JMS and Chris "CC" Carter (and Frank Spotnitz) involved in a project were true. Titled "World on Fire" JMS pitched the idea to Ten-Thirteen (CC's company) and they loved it. A contract between 10-13/Fox Studio's and JMS was drawn up and the series was pitched to CBS. In just 15 minutes CBS had agreed to pilot the show and they were working out the licensing fees when Harsh Realm was cancelled. Thus fell the house of cards, Fox studio's was very upset and informed CC they only wanted a 100% CC created series! Therefore meaning the "World on Fire" (JMS's idea) project is off until JMS can find another production company.

    Crusade (1999, Dec 04)
While nothing is ever final in Hollywood, JMS recently stated that in his opinion if Crusade was going to be saved it would have happened by now. He thanks all the fans for their efforts.

    TNT (1999, Dec 04)
JMS has stated the rumours of another B5 TNT movie are false.

    Crusade (1999, Aug 31)
[Update to Apr 18, 1999 Posting]
Space has stated that Crusade has done VERY well in the ratings, so much so they consider it a "hit." After initially having more than 200K+ viewers the rating barely dropped and have stayed in the 190K area which is unusual for a TV show. (These numbers are better than their current X-Files numbers). However, Space has been unable to clear a second run of the series, so catch it while you can.

When further pressed on the idea of co-financing Crusade, Dennis McGrath made it clear it won't happen and the series is dead. To quote " There is no white knight. There is no way to 'get it going' again. Crusade is dead." [source]

JMS (from the Zocalo) and Ain't it Cool News are reporting that Crusade is going through more changes that may result in Crusade moving from TNT. While this is not a cancellation, this is a key time when it comes to Crusade.

    Space
    CFCF
    (1999, Jan 31)
A few of you have e-mailed me asking what, if anything, does the above news mean about Crusade airing on Space (and CFCF). I assume Space/CFCF's contract is with WB and not TNT, as long as the show is not cancelled there will be no change. However, this may mean another delay to the starting broadcast date of Crusade.
An E-mail from Space has let me know they are on it and not to bother writing, they will will let us know more when they know more.
