Yarn Utilities

There have been many utilities programmed over the years to work with yarn. Some add functionality, some help with maintenance. They are diverse....

Add "Lines:"
[os/2]

Yarn normally only adds a "Lines:" header to outgoing USENET news articles. If you want to add a "Lines:" header to your e-mail as well then this is the tool to do it.

Fix Folder
[dos]

Fix Folder salvages messages from a corrupt Yarn folder. It comes with a DOS executable, but the C source code is there as well.

DOS

F_Order
[os/2][dos]

F_Order permanently re-sorts the messages in any yarn folder based on the "Date:" header.

Someone did port this to DOS at one point. I forget the details however. Ask in the Yarn mailing list if you need it.

OS/2 | DOS?

Get Newsgroups 6
[os/2]

So you are running yarn. How do you know what newsgroups are available at your ISP? Get News Groups will conveniently retrieve a list of them via a PPP or SLIP connection in NEWSRC or text formats. C++ Source code included.

OS/2 | GNG Page

NewGrp 1.4
[os/2]

A utility for retrieving a list of new (or all) newsgroups from an NNTP server.

NNIGN 2.2
[os/2][dos]

"No News is Good News" is an oddly named utility which scans and provides technical statistics about your Yarn 9.x news.dat database. It reports how much free space is contained in the database, and the 'slack', as well as the number of articles ('used blocks'). Pascal source code included.

OS/2 | DOS

QWKSoup
[dos]

QWKsoup will convert QWK packets to SOUP, and vice versa, so you can use Yarn as an off-line mail reader for QWK packets as well. Works well, though can be tricky to set up and get working just right.

Windows Helper for Yarn 1.5
[win32]

WHY provides a Win95 GUI shell to run Yarn. It can manage your inbound/outgoing mail packets, run Expire and Import, and generally organise your Yarn utilities and files.

YARF 1.5
[os/2][dos]

The "Yarn From Filter" can integrated into Yarn to process all your reply mail/news and modify the the "From:" header. You can use it to specify alternate e-mail addresses when replying to certain people, or to insert spam-avoiding fake addresses (including random elements) in just Usenet messages, while leaving your real address on E-mail. It is very configurable, and fairly easy to set up. Pascal source code included.

Yarn Automatic News Gadget
[os/2][dos]

YANG is a utility which hides newsgroups which have zero unread articles in them. Or in other words it causes Yarn to only display in the newsgroup list those newsgroups which have unread articles available in them.

YarnPack 1.4
[os/2][dos]

This is an experimental program which attempts to "pack-in-place" (shrink) your Yarn 9.x News.Dat file, freeing up any unused space, without resetting any import dates. It can also be used to just perform "integrity" testing on your news.dat file. The DOS version has severe limitations on the maximum news.dat size it can handle, and the program refuses to run in some conditions (better safe than sorry, is the programmer's motto), however sometimes it works great. Pascal source code included.

NOTE: If YarnPack gives you an error like "history:####>news.dat:####" do not worry. This is a condition which happens in the Yarn index file quite often, it's just that YarnPack does not know how to handle it. Unfortunately YarnPack will refuse to run while such a situation exists. Yarn, however, will sort the situation out itself eventually after several normal import/expire sessions. All you can do is keep trying to run "yarnpack /i" and monitor the situation until one day the "error" no longer occurs.

Yarn-to-Soup-with-Grep 3
[os/2][dos]

Unfortunately this wonderful utility has not been updated in some time and no longer works with the newer Yarn 9.x news.dat format. However Yarn to SOUP with Grep still works fine on Yarn folders. What does is search for messages and then make all matching messages into a new SOUP file. You can also use it to convert entire folders into SOUP packets for re-importing/re-filtering. (OS/2 users should use version 4 below)

OS/2 | DOS

Yarn-to-Soup-with-Grep 4.01
[os/2]

YTSG 4 can search your Yarn folders and news.dat for messages using regular expression search patterns and/or dates (even "expired" messages still existing in the news.dat can be examined). Results can be exported to SOUP packets or HTML files.

CGI scripts/executables are included which enables you to put your entire Yarn news.dat online via an OS/2 web server.

Yarn Spam 1.11
[dos]

Facilitates a Yarn-users fight against spam. Finds headers and builds a complaint.

Yarn Who 2.0
[dos]

Allows the user to write quick and dirty comments about Usenet users (from inside Yarn) to remember who they are.

Yarn Utilities 4
[dos]

Yarn Utilities are a collection of programs which can do the following: add "Lines:" to Soup packet, count messages in a folder, make folders editable, maps messages in a folder, add "X-Revision:" to message, select messages from a folder, convert folder to SOUP, sort a folder keeping threads, delete superseded messages, convert text file to a folder, convert folder to printable text.

DOS

Yexport
[dos]

Yexport will scan your news.dat file for words or phrases and export found messages to a yarn folder, or an "rnews" file.

DOS | Yexport Page

YFUT 1.2
[dos]

"Yarn Follow-Up Tracker" allows tracking of follow-ups to your own articles by looking for high scores (created by the program itself).

YIN 1.5
[os/2][dos]

The "Yarn Inbox Checker" is intended as a quick way to scan and review your Yarn inbox (or any other folder), without having to start up Yarn. It can be used to quickly check for new mail. It can print out all the message headers, or even scroll message text to the screen, or simply provide a summary. Pascal source code included.

OS/2 | DOS

YURL 1.12
[dos]

A little nifty tool for picking out URLs in articles and mails. Meant for the newsreader Yarn, but it can be used along with anything capable of piping articles to external DOS programs. (Also available is a "Blind" version for visually impared users.)
