I didn't get an error message, but all my printer did was blink
stupidly for a few seconds.

I don't understand this. I have WordPad and Word 7.0 on my system,
and I understand how to make a shortcut to an executable file, but
how does one make a shortcut that makes one of these programs print
out a particular filename?

I've always printed files by saving them to disk, opening up Word,
opening the saved file, and printing it.
