Using REBUILD to shrink NEWS.DAT sounds like a kludge. REBUILD is
supposed to fix it when things have gone wrong. I think I'd prefer a
"garbage collection" option for EXPIRE.

Hmm? The size of the MAILED/POSTED folders can be controlled easily.
When you delete a message from *them*, they are gone, and do not take up
space on the disk any more.
Personally, I only keep those folders for the sake of messages I may
want to remail/repost in case it didn't work right the first time.
After all, any posted article also appears on the newsgroup the next
time I grab it. And I've set Bcc to myself, so I also get a copy of
every mailed message back in my mailbox, which serves as a quick check
that at least uqwk delivered the message correctly. Of course, it isn't
a foolproof check, but it works. Every month or so, I clear out last
month's worth of messages, and put them in files that I save on
diskettes.

Well, you might as well ask for Yarn to write and send a message by
thought control. :-)
