I thought that was changed a long time ago. Check the CHANGES file:
VERSION 0.86
- When removing deleted messages from a folder, the file is now updated in
place instead of writing a temporary copy of the file.
VERSION 0.74
- Folder files are now rewritten only if any message in the folder is
marked for deletion, otherwise the message status flags are updated
in place.
Were these changes "undone" later?
