Sorry, can't help you with the latter, but I remember someone else
reporting consistent core dumps under linux on this list a year or
more ago. You might check the archives and email whoever it was to
see if they resolved it.

In the mean time, try some of the following:
make sure your .newsrc is stripped down (i.e. only subscribed groups)
don't use -x
do just news or just mail, not both
check .newsrc for exceedingly long lines and truncate them leaving only
one article range.
try out the new uqwk version (2.0? I don't remember)
